Dust Build up - How Do You Prevent It?

Dust is composed of microscopic particles like hair, dirt, skin cells, et cetera. If you don’t have a regular cleaning routine, it will eventually accumulate and grow thicker. It can cause allergies and other respiratory problems, so it’s best to keep it at bay.

You can hire a regular house cleaning service in your area to help you if you can’t find the time to clean. Sometimes a little help will go a long way; you may as well get help from experts, right?

But for now, without further ado, here are the things you should know to prevent dust from building up:

  1. Air Filters and Air Purifiers
The most effective way to avoid dust build up is through air filtration. Air filters or central heating or cooling systems control dust levels in the air. Of course, some dust is inevitable, but a clean filter will slow down the process.

The best way to maintain the performance of your filtration system is to replace the air filters every 1 - 3 months.

Air Purifiers trap dust particles as they clean the air you breathe, which probably makes them the best solution for families who have dust allergies. Although they can only clean the room they’re in.

  2. Clean - Vacuuming
Cleaning is probably the most obvious thing you could do to get rid of dust. Well, it is the only thing you could do for existing dust. Use a vacuum cleaner with HEPA filters. HEPA means high-efficiency particulate air, and with this feature, you get to be sure that your vacuum sucks up as much dust as possible.

  3. Clean - Sweeping and Mopping
If you don’t own a vacuum cleaner, sweeping and mopping is the way to go. Use a broom to sweep away the hair and tiny dust particles on the floors. You should also consider cleaning more in areas where dust is more prevalent. Use a dustpan to collect and toss out the dust you’ve gathered.

Mopping after sweeping is a great way to ensure that there is no dust left after you’ve swept (or vacuumed). Do these two together frequently, and you’ll get that dust problem under control.

  4. Get Rid of Clutter and Knick-Knacks
If you own a lot of decorations or tiny souvenirs and display, this will give you a long time to reduce dust. Imagine going through each one just to clear the dust they have gathered. Cleaning will require more time.

But if there are items you want to keep, you should consider moving them to other rooms or locations. Choose rooms where you and your family rarely go to. Maybe have an enclosed viewing unit with glass doors of some sort. That way, your main rooms will be less likely to accumulate dust.

Oh, and another thing, whenever you clean your knick-knacks, use microfiber cloths. It is designed to trap and hold dust. Old towels or shirts and feather dusters tend to move the dust instead of removing it.
